While not brand new they are essentially unused. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eAbout the Rig\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The Pattern 83 webbing system was produced in response to a need for comfortable, lightweight, and simple-to-use webbing for South African soldiers during the latter part of the Border War. The civilian camping and outdoors industries were contracted to produce the Pat 83 concept, and the resulting system was far ahead of its time. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Officially discontinued in 2015, the pattern 83 webbing system is now largely phased out of service. However, with 30-some-years in active use, the Pattern 83 remains an iconic part of South African Culture.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e Pattern 83 has been featured as the go-to load bearing gear of various movie baddies and mercenaries (Notably \u003cem\u003eBlood Diamond\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eDistrict 9,\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eMad Max\u003c\/em\u003e). It has even appeared in \u003cem\u003eMetal Gear Solid: V\u003c\/em\u003e and other video game titles. \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e This chest rig takes inspiration from the famous \"chicom\" Chinese chest rig that was supplied in huge quantities to the rebel \"terrorist\" forces the South African military faced.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e It is made from waterproof, durable Cordura nylon in the \"Nutria brown\" color of most SADF equipment. The nylon material is coated on the inside to increase durability while keeping weight to a minimum. The shoulder straps are padded and fully adjustable in length by slide buckles. This chest rig features three connected magazine pouches (two magazines each) meant for the R4 (Galil) rifle, but it can easily fit AR and some battle rifle magazines as well.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The unconnected, large right pocket is meant for a smoke grenade, but you can easily store a few bandages or a soda there. On the left, there is a narrow pouch intended for a pen, flare, or small knife. There are two smaller pouches on the right stacked on top of each other for grenades or small items such as cleaning kits. The other side of the chest rig's single panel features a spacious document pocket for storing important papers. The previous owners often wrote their names or doodled on this side of the chest rig, sometimes in the flap for the document pouch.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e The chest rig is fastened at your back by a Fastex type buckle located on the adjustable lower straps. Like the chicom rig from which it was derived, there is nothing on your back besides straps, so you can comfortably use it with a rucksack. At the time P83 was introduced most of the world was still using legacy polyester fabrics.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e2. The rust proof and shock proof plastic 'fastex' style buckles used on the chest rig were also brand new tech, invented by ITW Nexus in 1977 and produced from 1979 onwards.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e3. Finally, there is evidence of SADF experimenting with Velcro closures for magazine pockets as early as 1978-79 in transitional prototypes. While Velcro technology was by no means new at the time, this type of military application \u003cem\u003ewas new. \u003c\/em\u003eSo while the rest of the world struggled with snaps, the SADF enjoyed fast, easy-to-access pouches on their gear years before anyone else did. During motorized patrols it was worn by itself, allowing soldiers to carry enough ammunition and equipment to vigorously react to close contact without excess bulk or weight. However in the 1980s \u003cem\u003edyed \u003c\/em\u003eCordura fabric was a brand new technology - pioneered in 1977. At the time P83 was introduced most of the world was still using legacy polyester fabrics.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e2. The rust proof and shock proof plastic 'fastex' style buckles used on the chest rig were also brand new tech, invented by ITW Nexus in 1977 and produced from 1979 onwards.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e3. Finally, there is evidence of SADF experimenting with Velcro closures for magazine pockets as early as 1978-79 in transitional prototypes. While Velcro technology was by no means new at the time, this type of military application \u003cem\u003ewas new. \u003c\/em\u003eSo while the rest of the world struggled with snaps, the SADF enjoyed fast, easy-to-access pouches on their gear years before anyone else did. (This was likely aided by the expiration of Velcro's patent in 1978 which ushered in a wave of affordable, generic hook-and-loop products.)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaterials aside, the chest rig was excellent at its job. During motorized patrols it was worn by itself, allowing soldiers to carry enough ammunition and equipment to vigorously react to close contact without excess bulk or weight. On long foot patrols, the chest rig was worn with the larger ‘grootsak’ backpack.
